Why AD/CVD matters

The duty class that breaks the most import deals

The US Department of Commerce imposes AD/CVD when a foreign government is found to be subsidizing a product (CVD) or selling it in the US below cost (AD). The duties range from a few percent to over 200%, and they apply on top of Section 301, Section 122, MPF, and every other tariff.

The trap: AD/CVD orders target categories that look perfectly normal — solar panels, certain steel hardware, mattresses, aluminum extrusions, hand-knotted carpets, even quartz countertops. Many sellers source these products from China for years before they ever notice the AD/CVD exposure on a customs invoice.

A real example: wooden bedroom furniture from China falls under Commerce order A-570-890 with a duty range of 4.56% to 216.01%. A seller importing $40K of these chairs without checking AD/CVD could owe an extra $86,000+ in duty at customs — wiping out the order AND putting them in violation of CBP regulations.
